Local Dispatch (24/11/13)

Friends and comrades,

Things are moving quickly in terms of potential job actions and work stoppages. We will share what we know when we know it, through the SMS/Text line and website. For now, we will be covering the most recent negotiations update, this weekend's CUPW support rally, the SMS/Text service, and a long list of reminders.

Solidarity,

Kyle Turner, Communications Officer

Negotiations Update

Early Tuesday morning, our union issued 72-hour strike notice. This means that as of the morning of Friday, November 15th, we will be in a position to legally strike. To read the full bulletin and the list of unresolved issues that led to our union issuing strike notice, click HERE.

In response to that, Canada Post issued its 72-hour lockout notice several hours later. This means that as of 8 am Eastern Standard Time on Friday, November 15th, Canada Post will have the right to lock us out. To read that bulletin, click HERE. Canada Post has also published a bulletin about the terms and conditions of employment for CUPW members once the 72-hours is up. You can read their bulletin about Urban members HERE and RSMC members HERE.

Our union has also published a bulletin about the rights we still have under federal law once our collective agreements expire: there are still types of leave and legal definitions of a workday (8-hours), workweek (40-hours), and when overtime is to be paid. To read the bulletin, click HERE.

None of this means that we will definitely be on strike or locked out on Friday, but it does mean that our union and the Corporation now have the legal right to strike or lockout respectively. At this time, we have no further information about what things will look like on Friday, but we will send an update when we know.
